Crew. “But I like the idea of it.”

Muytjens frequently entertains guests who work in the worlds of fashion and advertising, and it’s understandable that some might be distraught upon leaving the city’s always-on energy and arriving in a lush, rolling landscape where birdsong replaces honking horns and sirens. His strategy is to distract their attention from inactive smartphones. “We make plans for dinner,” he says. “We cook and go antiquing. Or we hike—there are great nature trails around here.” ...

J.Crew at Toronto Eaton Centre {finally open!}

J.Crew’s latest Women's store, as well as their first Men's Shop in Canada at Toronto Eaton Centre, is finally open for business.

"Thanks!" to Get Fresh Press who shared her observations of the new stores with us, which is laid out in bullet form for ease:

• ... the layout is slightly larger with a dedicated side room for suiting and Collection type pieces (Lots of Jules paisley dresses, ...)
• The fitting area for women is also better designed with proper doors versus the Yorkdale curtains, but the lighting is still dark and slightly greenish.
• Less of a security guard presence at front door than when Yorkdale opened.
• I actually liked the organization and styling in our first men's store, which is right next door but has to be entered separately, slightly more than the women's.
• My big annoyance was the continual small disparities between the regular online Canadian pricing and the in-store merchandise - always greater.  For example, the navy field jacket, which I did purchase, is $172 online but $178 in-store
• All of the past roll-out regular merchandise which is already discounted in US stores and online is still full price, which I guess is understandable for a new opening.  
• The if "while supplies last" if you spend $300 gift with purchase ...is apparently a "ladies" Timex watch
• My reco to other JC fans would be to do your online shopping before you go to make sure you are getting good value.
• And JC is also heavily promoting the opening of a third Toronto store at Fairview Mall in the North York area of the city end of this month.

My personal pick is the Excursion Quilted Vest in Herringbone (Item 93111; $138.00) that is currently on sale for $103.50. I purchased this great vest (as well as the solid ivory version) when it was on sale (25% off) in stores last week.

It is a beautiful piece! The contrast piping and gold hardware are nice touches. I know some JCAs are not fans of the printed herringbone graphic, but I actually found it lovely. I also think it will make it easier to clean.

As for sizing... I own the Excursion Quilted Vest version from last year and found the size XS fit me best then. For whatever reason, this year's version of the vest fits me better in the size XXS. The chest is a tiny bit snugger, but the body looks much better on me. So it might be best to try this on or call for measurements, to make sure you order the right size.

Lastly, this vest (in all its forms) must be selling well, because I notice that my stores are only carrying a few sizes now (instead of the full range).

J.Crew Debuts on Lane Crawford

After months of planning and anticipation, American retailer J. Crew’s long-awaited Autumn/Winter 2012 expansion in partnership with Hong Kong’s Lane Crawford is finally set to launch. Appearing first at Lane Crawford Canton Road and online at lanecrawford.com on September 26, followed by Lane Crawford ifc mall on September 28, J.Crew will offer customers in Asia special access to curated women’s and men’s ready-to-wear collections, including shoes and accessories. This two-pronged on- and offline approach will give customers throughout Hong Kong and mainland China the ability to shop in-person at J.Crew outside of North America for the first time.

J.Crew’s partnership with Lane Crawford is unfolding in real-time this week as an instructive — and likely promising — case study of how some Western brands are entering, or perhaps should enter, the Chinese market. By starting with an online-heavy strategy and partnering with a department store, J.Crew is able to bypass many of the headaches that accompany the construction of a full-blown store. As Divia Harilela recently wrote for Jing Daily, “tread[ing] lightly by creating an online presence first” instead of diving head-first by establishing a physical presence is the wiser road to take, particularly for a brand that’s well-established at home but untested in Asia.

J.Crew began its Greater China expansion late last year, starting by offering flat-rate shipping to Hong Kong (HK$150) and mainland China (US$30). Within six months, Hong Kong quickly became one of J.Crew’s top five biggest markets. The company seems confident that finding and partnering with a credible retailer (or e-tailer) before going solo is an effective way to tackle the very different animal that is the Chinese market now that it’s set for a physical appearance. Only after a strong online presence is established under the wing of Lane Crawford will J.Crew likely find the idea of opening an independent brick-and-mortar store in Hong Kong less daunting and more economically viable.

But what’s a grand opening without a party? To celebrate the collaboration, a cocktail event will be held on October 11, 2012 at Lane Crawford ifc mall, attended by leading members of the J. Crew team, among them creative director Jenna Lyons, womenswear head designer Tom Mora and menswear head designer Frank Muytjens.

Oh, the J.Crew catalog. 89 aspirational pages for me and every other middle-class working woman with big sartorial dreams and not enough disposable income. Will I pay $45 for a tee shirt? Will I really pay $45 for a tee shirt? Sigh. ...If it helps, remember that the J.Crew catalog is like Dr. Who's space-time continuum where things happen between its pages that don't actually happen in real life.

First of all, they call it the "the J.Crew style guide" because catalogs are for companies like (sniff) Boden. Other ways the J.Crew-niverse is not like the real world:

• Orange lipstick is not a thing women wear.
• Monogrammed cashmere sweaters, unless you live in Greenwich.
• Only in the J.Crew catalog does the phrase "VERY personal stylist" not sound like someone who is going to style your pubic hair.
• Clashing.
• A small army of women who look and dress like Jenna Lyons is actually creepy.
• $400 for a pair of slippers.
• Matching your "red pepper houndstooth popover" to your "red pepper popover pant."
• What is a "red pepper houndstooth popover" and why does it cost $525?

If Old Navy would just make a catalog — excuse me, style guide — it would really be better for the self-esteem of every woman that I know.

Too funny! And the small army of Jenna-drones is very creepy. I am surprised J.Crew is keeping up with that.

Exciting news from jcrewfactory.com...

As mentioned in last month's "Join the J.Crew Factory Club {yes please!}" post, J.Crew is creating their own Factory Club.

Today, J.Crew sent an email reminding customers that a new J.Crew Factory site will be available on Thursday, October 11th.

Even though this email does not mention it, I believe JCAs need to sign up (click HERE) to join the club (is this now called "Factory First Program"?) You can add a new email account or log-in with your existing J.Crew account.

I am excited to see what the new Factory site will look like, what extra features it will offer, and what the Factory First/ Club entails! For example, I love to see more outfit ideas than the few they currently offer. I think that actually helps sell Factory clothes to customers like me, who are infrequent Factory shoppers.

From the email, it sounds like the J.Crew Factory site will be down from October 8th through the 11th. I can only hope that the site goes live without issues. (Let us hope they learned from J.Crew's website upgrade failure from a few years ago.)

It's that time again, to take a look at an image of J.Crew pieces from seasons past! As caribbelle (in this post) so beautifully termed, "ye olde j crew of yore".

This post features an ad used for the Double-Faced Wool Lexington Jacket (Item 85798; $250.00) from 2007. I know, I know. Enough about this jacket. But the jacket is timeless. I also think the outfit is something I can easily see on a store mannequin today.
